Your body has the innate desire to live till the moment of death !

Every single cell in your body wants to live ,is conscious, is intelligent and able to receive and respond to environmental signals. Your body actually talks to you all the time.

The language being used : sensations!

It is very simple …. If you feel good, you are probably good, keep on doing what you are doing.

If you experience pain or just don’t feel great…your body is telling you that something needs to change. This can be anything from changing your diet, excercising more ,training less, getting another job or take a look at your posture to find the root cause of the pain in your body.

Your body is regenerating itself every nanosecond to heal to adapt and grow and you can optimize and accelerate this process. Say good bye to pain killer,to compromising your training and sometimes even avoid surgery.

Just stop for a moment and imagine yourself feeling unbeatable, full of energy in a vibrant body . Your are strong your motions are fluid and what ever it is your are doing “you make it look easy” because your body/mind are optimal aligned so can go to your full potential ,nothing is holding you back ………

Team Jordan : Karen Lundgren , Paul and Jordan Romero are amazing and inspiring people and I am very lucky to work with and learn from them .

Good news is : Everything you need is already within !! Yes everything !! And I will show you how to use “everything”.

Lower back pain after long bike ride or run just might be your Psoas screaming for help.

My WHAT?

Her is the reality….Last year I supported an athlete during a 12 hour Mtb race . After about 6 hours into the race he started to

experience severe lower back pain that took “his breath away” and then of course deprived him of well needed energy .

Analysis : lower back locked , difficulty breathing, less energy !
Problem: Bad posture, unhappy Psoas.

So what is a Psoas?
The Psoas is one of your major hip flexors AND when this one gets tight the result is a host of problems that are quite common in the athletes, non athletes and exceedingly common in the endurance sport world.

The Psoas muscle lies at the center of your body, provides much of your core strength and literally pulls it all together, inside to outside , upper to lower body ,breathing to running or biking…
This muscle is attached to the inside of the lower portion of your spine ( T12 to L5 )and then connects to the inside of your femur – big thigh bone(lesser trochanter).
When ever you run or bike the Psoas will contract and if you don’t take action to release this muscle after your training it remains tight. Now the Psoas will pull on the inside of your spine – your low back feels locked and tight or even goes into spasm, NOT FUN! Or it will pull the head of your femur into the hip socked – hip pain and one of your legs seems to be shorter then the other to name only a
couple of issues.

Bottom line a tight Psoas is something you can NOT afford if you want to reach your full performance and have fun training and racing!

Okay that’s the Psoas, but what about the breathing and lack of energy?
You can blame low back pain for all of these issues; however another cause is the fact that the Psoas provides the root support for the Diaghragm the main muscle in charge of in and exhalation. As you know lack of oxygen equals lack of energy!

Avoidance: How can you release the Psoas?
It seems like everybody needs to.
There are some key exercises using very precise bio mechanics to release this important muscle . I will guide you in detail through these exercises to make sure you get the release you need.. Look for ……..at www.yogawolf.com online body alignment – coming soon !!!

Can yoga help you to run 1oo miles??

This month story is about Richard Masyczek. I got to know him about 3 month ago as he jointed my X-fit yoga class. Always smiling and or laughing, open curious eyes and paying attention to his body language also in need of Anusara Yoga.

One thing I quickly found out is that running in your 50’s is not the same as running in your 20’s! While your mind says, “oh, you can do that.” Your body is saying, “Ouch, ooch, ouch, hey that hurts!” So while you can ignore your body for a while, it will eventually win. Your knees will start hurting, or your ankle will swell, your muscles will ache, or all the above forcing you to either 1) quit running or 2) deal with the issue. I chose option 2 as I love running and did not want to give up all the benefits of running such as a healthier heart, lower cholesterol, and a healthier weight. So I began to look at how to deal with the pains and the aches and noticed in running magazines that they promoted yoga as a way to help.

Pain is the compassionte feedback system of your body telling you that something you are doing is not working! You may train to much, to little, bike to small, shoes to big, your are not spending enough time with your family maybe it’s time to put more veggies on your plate OR your body isn’t optimal aligned and now you are in PAIN! Time to see the YogaWolf.

Having taken some yoga classes in the past however, I was a little skeptical as most of the classes seemed to focus on how you need to conform to yoga vs. how yoga can help you. Until I found Doreen and the Living Yoga Center. With Doreen, I found someone who is an athlete (she has done Ironman Triathlons) and who has gone through the aches and pains herself and has developed a yoga program that deals with those aches and pains. Doreen has essentially been able to “marry” the need to follow yoga principals as a discipline along with the needs of her students as athletes.

I WILL MEET YOU WHERE YOU ARE ! I often hear people say ” I am not flexible enough to do yoga “

There is no such thing . It is the teachers responsibility to adjust every posture to your individual needs. You will feel different every day and so will your training and then of course your yoga practice.

The two main ways that Doreen has been able to help me is by focusing on:

Balance: Balance of body as well as balance of mind. For example, she worked with me on aching knees. She showed me how a runner’s body can be out of balance by just focusing on leg muscles causing other parts of the body (e.g. the knees) to become out of balance. She worked with me on stretching hip and calf muscles with the result that after several weeks, my knee pains went away. My one or two day a week class with her has helped tremendously in developing a healthier approach to sports.

You all probably heard the term “Connective Tissue. As the name implies it’s connecting stuff. In the humans body muscles, bones , tendons, ligaments, organs you name it, is being held together by that tissue. Important to realize is that EVERYTHING CONNECTS EVERYTHING !! Stand up and look down at your feet, is one turning out or both ? This could be that cause or the symptom of your low back pain, knee pain or even the head ache that keeps coming back .

Focus: I love trail running and have noticed that the exercises Doreen goes through in her classes helps me focus on the trail. This ability to focus is what helps me to get through extremely tough terrain such as running through streams or up the sides of hills.

Turning the world up side down will not just strengthen your upper body but also will offer you a different point of view.Literally! Every action or inaction in your physical body will effect your mental and emotional body. Richard is doing a handstand variation to cultivated more focus, confidence and he is expanding his boundary conditions of thinking, all in one pose , how cool is that?

Has yoga helped then? Absolutely!!!!

Just finished my first full marathon and will be running several endurance trail races in the upcoming months. Long range goal? To run a 50 mile endurance trail run next year and a 100 mile run by the time I am 60. Will only be able to do this if I keep the balance and focus I am learning with Doreen.

I have no doubt that Richard will run 100 miles soon. He decided to listen to the innate intelligence of his body and learns to respond in way that will not only improve his running performance but even more amazing will enhance his already rockin life !!

(he has a wife and FOUR daughter’s….I thought that was worth mentioning .

The Wolf Pack was out in Santa Barbara for their long course triathlon on August 28th. This weekend we had Slater & Monique Fletcher, Chuck Caroulis and myself ready for the torture! This was my first experience racing with a group of friends and not only did we just race but it was a weekend of adventure.

A 5:30am wake up is tough but waking up with my buddies the fun already started and we were off on our bikes to the race start. When we got there we set up our transitions and then we were off to the water to warmup for the big race. When Monique and me put our faces in the water I was in SHOCK, the temp was 55 and my face was freezing. But we were able to warm up with a combo of swimming and running down the beach. We were now ready to race.

Slater (he says he was smiling , we could argue with that)

The swim was first and I was ready to wing it! Swimming is my weakest discipline and least favorite so I decided to skip it in training since I had very little time to train. But little did I know the ocean had different plans for me. Within the first couple of minutes I got kicked in the head, then swallowed an entire wave, threw up in the water, calves cramped, hands and feet completely numb, neck got rubbed off from wetsuit and everytime I came in contact with seaweed I thought I was being eaten by a shark. During the swim I was convinced that this was my last triathlon and I was tempted to quit. But I knew that my friends were also out in the powerful currents of the ocean. So, now quitting was not an option for me.

I learned a big lesson by not training my weakest discipline. My swim lasted over 51 minutes compared to my training partners that finished around 30 minutes. You are only as strong as your weakest link. I’m back in the pool again!

Now that I was “SAFE” on the bike and in a hurry, I followed a group of weekend bike riders off the course. Oops! Successfully loosing another 20 minutes and brought along a group of girls too!! HA! With all my lost time I decided to sit back and enjoy the rest of my race.

Racing with the Wolf Pack has taught me that racing with close friends makes it easier to endure when the times get tough. Afterwards we all enjoyed sharing our experiences with each other. What we thought was hard at the time, we were now proud of ourselves for what we accomplished. I can now laugh at my race mistakes!

Bottom Line – proper training has its benefits ; ) and make sure you always bring your friends with you.

I believe more problems occur when we try to control behavior–others’ as well as our own behavior. In Yoga, we learn a different approach. We learn to ask ourselves “How can we participate and co-create situations.” I try to teach students to pause and receive all situations as they are offered to them. I teach them to be respons -able, ideally, with love and compassion. To participate and co-create in situations is a much softer and much more loving approach to life.

Rajanaka is the lineage of my yoga philosophy teacher Dr. Douglas Brooks, one of the world’s leading scholars of Hindu Tantrism .Rajanaka says that, as embodied beings, we will and should have the full spectrum of human emotions and experiences including anger, fear, happiness, courage, desire, grief, wonder, disgust, and peace. Yoga is not about stopping these experiences from happening, but how we can open to receive the gifts that these experiences offer us. We do this by fully engaging life and stepping into its currents of joy and challenges with and open heart and courage..

Number one cause of soft tissue injuries among athletes is muscular imbalance.

A regular yoga practice will minimize the possibility of injury by lengthening and strengthening the muscles simultaneously if done in proper alignment.

The question is not “do you stretch “ it’s “HOW do you PERFORM the stretch???”

Performing a stretch without proper muscular activation and alignment can actually damage the muscles and the fascia tissues. Often Athletes who train and repeatedly stretch their muscles in an unsafe manner can’t even pin point the exact time they strained their muscles.

Imagine a heavy weight hanging on a rope with a few fibers that are shorter than all the rest. The shorter fibers will carry the majority of the stress load; if the stretch, or tensile stress, is great enough, those fibers may rupture. The same will happen if you work a muscle that is not engaged and optimal aligned.

During muscular stretching, the distribution of the stress load across the muscle fibers is influenced by several factors, including the position of the muscle within the surrounding tissues, its rotation relative to its bone attachments, and its level of engagement.

There is a way to optimize your stretching practice by learning to isometrically engage your muscles and align your bones and soft tissue before you deepen the stretch.

Doreen will show and teach you how to perform the stretches , using the Universal Principals of Alignment of Anusara Yoga, a set of precise bio mechanics that can be applied to any possible posture.

Yoga is the great ‘secret’ of many successful athletes.

“You will work with muscles you didn’t even know you had.”

Train more efficiently!
